THE “AT ALBANIA” TAVERN
At the corner of Knez Mihailova and Kolarceva streets in Belgrade, 1860. . several bars were built, and in one of them the tavern “Kod Albanije” was opened. That unsightly, badly built yellow house was best described by Branislav Nušić, a writer and comedian, calling it a mockery of Belgrade, but also a very profitable tavern for its tenants due to minimal overheads and huge traffic.
The tavern was demolished in 1939. . While parts of the walls fell around the regular guests, they sat quietly and drank. The famous bohemian Raka Vulović took on the role of priest, treated them to pretzels and wine, and gave a farewell speech to this iconic tavern.
